#9 We Couldn’t Agree With The Polling More
We had a lot of favorable benchmarks along the way, but there was one that really stood out for us: polling.
When we began working and campaigning with SCFOR, the state of the roads in South Carolina as an election issue didn’t even show up on polls. It didn’t even register on the GOP Primary vote.
The big question was, “Would you support a raise in the gas tax?” And the answer was an overwhelming, “NO.”
However, at the end… we were seeing around 57% of voters would support an increase in the state’s gas tax. That’s a huge turn around. But it gets better.
The most common polling questions is, “What issues do you care about the most?” Surprisingly, after decades and decades of hearing the same answer over and over (jobs –people will always care about jobs), Fixing SC Roads slid into first place.
Above jobs, above the economy and above everything else, the people of South Carolina cared about fixing the damn roads.
