2013 Push Back featured charities

We were overwhelmed by the number of nominations that we received for our Push Back program.

It has been fun learning about each group and seeing how many people are hard at work making a difference in our community.

It was difficult selecting just 9 groups for the 2013 year but, the Push Digital team has voted and the results are in:

Award Winning Innovation and Community Service

Congratulations on your Senate Resolution, Wesley! The Push Digital team is proud to have a CEO who is a leading innovator in both politics and giving back to the community.

From innovating campaigns by integrating technology, to starting a social media ministry for First Baptist Church of Columbia, Wesley has certainly achieved much for the community and his company. His entrepreneurial passion and giving spirit, is truly an inspiration for his peers.

There are many in Columbia who would be well served to learn from Wesley’s drive and determination, in serving the community where it is concerned. This honor, along with his being named to The State Newspaper’s prestigious 20 under 40 list have made 2013 quite a year so far for our founder and CEO. Keep the accomplishments coming, Wesley!

Here’s Pub Politics Episode 106: Do You Know Where Your Candidates Are?

Start The Conversation

Talk to, Not at.

Social media is a conversation. It’s not a bully pulpit to preach your views and scare a crowd into joining your side. One of the common misconceptions about its use is that very point. Many folks use it to send the same old boring updates about them and to build a cult of personality. Well, bad strategy- social media isn’t about you, it’s about engagement. If you want it to be about you, lure them with your ideas.

We read a pretty good article the other day that highlighted this exact point. We see elected officials doing the right thing with social media- engaging, cracking jokes, being real people- and then we see the wrong use of social media. People fall into that category when they don’t understand the informal edge that social media provides. They instead think that the language and tone that they use at “the well” should be used in a tweet.

Nope. That’s not how it works. This animal is different.

First off, it’s ok for officials to have their official Facebook pages that are all about their achievements, the committees they serve on, and what good they’re doing for the public. But they also need to have something a bit less formal. There needs to be a place for them to talk about what shows they watch, post pictures of their kids swimming, and communicate something much more important- that they have real lives and interact with real people.

We talked about this a while back, but it’s still true- 25-25-25-25. 25% should be formal politics, 25% should be campaign news, 25% should be personal life, and 25% whatever you want it to be. People like the unpredictable nature of Social Media. And, that’s what attracts followers. If people know you’re just going to be talking about Obamacare, or what barbecue fundraiser you’re having in East Podunk next week, the interest and your appeal will fade.

So, take these suggestions into consideration and evaluate your efforts. There’s no sense exaggerating a failed strategy.
